PROFESSIONAL CAR PHOTOGRAPHY

How to photograph your car and make it look professional

Is it your first automobile photoshoot? Here's how to do it.

Gear

  • Camera

  • twos-peed lights

  • light stand

  • two umbrellas

  • a transmitter/trigger

Tip #1 - Camera settings

start with your camera settings, and set your camera to manual or autofocus. Set your white balance according to weather conditions orate if you like. Set the aperture to F/11 or F/8 for a sharper image. Since we are not freezing any motion and your camera is on a tripod, this will depend on the available light; set your shutter speed as low from 1/100, and increase if you like it. before using a speedlight to fill in the light. you have to make sure your ambient light is set correctly.

Tip #2 - Setting up your camera and lights

Start by setting your tripod and placing it in a suitable spot where you will get the full view of the automobile. the tripod will help keep the shot in one position and avoid camera shake.

set speed lights on sync using a trigger. Start with low power and increase if you need to increase the light.

Use umbrellas to diffuse and spread out the light.

Make sure to cover all the visible parts of the car. Make sure that the light is spreading consistently. This will make post-production easy.

Be aware of reflections on the car depending on the colour of the car. e.g. black and white cars reflect a lot.

Tip #4 - How to photograph interior

To photograph the dashboard and show exterior. I would strongly advise a white cloth over the window to add more light and create consistency over the window and that there are no distractions.

Tip #5 - Post-production

In post, you will select all the images you've lit separately and put them in one folder. then what you will do is open photoshop > Edit > file > scripts> Load files into stack >select folder and open. The images will be stacked as layers. Have the one you would like to have as a final image and brush into it. by creating a layer mask, invert and then blush the lit parts onto your original image.
